The term cultural ecology was first used by the American anthropologist, Julian Steward, in his book, The Theory of Culture Change, in Cultural ecology, by definition, is the study of how people’s culture is an adaptation of their surrounding environment. The environment in turn, is a reflection of how people live in harmony with nature.   One part of cultural ecology with immediate impact is the study of adaptation, how people deal with, affect and are affected by their changing environment. That is vital to our survival on the planet because it offers understanding and possible solutions to important contemporary problems, like deforestation, loss of species, food scarcity.

Environmental change is one of the most pressing problems facing the world community. In this volume, the authors take a critical step toward establishing a new environmental science by deconstructing the traditional culture/nature dichotomy and placing human/environmental interaction at the center of any new attempts to deal with global environmental change.3/5(1).
